Wyeth painted The Homesteader as an illustration for a story by Wilbur Daniel Steele printed in Ladies Home Journal in September 1930. The female figure represents Ivy, the main character. Ivy towers above the land, framed by a mass of dark clouds that opens to a bluer, clearer sky. In this work, Wyeth pays tribute to the Western American landscape and the men and women who settled it.
