Despite the brilliant sunlight flooding the scene in Sunlight on Brownstones, Edward Hopper's mechanical row of brownstones and their anonymous inhabitants convey the loneliness of modern life. Neither of Hopper's figures looks at each other. None of the brownstones are personalized. Like the majority of Hoppers work, Sunlight on Brownstones conveys the sense of silence and estrangement that, for the artist, was characteristic of modern life. Sunlight on Brownstones furnishes one of the four superb examples of work in the Wichita Art Collection by an artist who is one of the greats of twentieth century painting.
