Birger Sandzen immigrated to the town of Lindsborg, Kansas, from Sweden in 1894. Sandzen was especially fond of the Smoky Hill River Valley of central Kansas and its "delicious light." This landscape provided much of the subject matter for his paintings. His style is characterized by heavily texture paints of brilliant decorative color.
